What is a lumpsum investment?
A lumpsum investment means investing a large amount of money in a mutual fund or any other asset at one time, instead of spreading it over months. For example, investing ₹5,00,000 in an equity fund today is a lumpsum investment.
Lumpsum investing works best when you have a long time horizon of 5 years or more, because the full amount starts compounding from day one.
Lumpsum calculator formula
The calculator uses the standard compound interest formula:
A = P × (1 + r)^n
- A = Maturity amount
- P = Amount invested today
- r = Expected yearly rate of return (in decimal)
- n = Number of years
Example: ₹25,000 invested for 10 years at 12% per year grows to about ₹77,646. Your estimated gain is ₹52,646.

Lumpsum vs SIP: which is better?
There is no single right answer. Lumpsum gives higher returns when the market goes up after you invest. SIP protects you from investing everything at a market high. If you are not sure about the market, you can invest the lumpsum amount in a liquid fund and use a Systematic Transfer Plan (STP) to move it into an equity fund in parts.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum lumpsum investment in mutual funds?
Most funds accept a minimum lumpsum investment of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000. Some funds allow as low as ₹100.
Is lumpsum investment risky?
The full amount is exposed to market movement from the first day. If the market falls right after you invest, your value can go down in the short term. Over long periods, the risk reduces.
How is lumpsum return calculated?
The return is calculated with compound interest: invested amount × (1 + rate)^years. This calculator does this automatically.
Can I add more money later to a lumpsum investment?
Yes. You can make additional purchases in the same fund at any time, or start a SIP along with your lumpsum investment.
Does the lumpsum calculator include tax?
No. The result is before tax. Equity funds attract long term capital gains tax on gains above ₹1.25 lakh per year when held for more than one year.
