What is a step up SIP?
A step up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) is a normal SIP where the monthly amount goes up automatically at a fixed interval, usually once a year. If you start with ₹10,000 per month and choose a 10% annual step up, the second year you invest ₹11,000 per month, the third year ₹12,100, and so on.
Almost every fund house in India offers this option when you set up a SIP. You choose the increase either as a percentage (say 10%) or as a fixed amount (say ₹1,000 extra every year). This calculator works with the percentage method, which is the more common choice.
Step up SIP vs normal SIP: an example
Suppose you invest ₹10,000 per month for 10 years and expect 12% returns. A normal SIP builds about ₹23.2 lakh on an investment of ₹12 lakh. With a 10% annual step up, you invest ₹19.1 lakh over the same 10 years and end with about ₹32.7 lakh.
Over longer periods the gap becomes much wider. ₹5,000 per month for 20 years at 12% gives roughly ₹46 lakh as a flat SIP, but about ₹93 lakh with a 10% yearly step up. You end up with double the corpus, and most of the extra investment comes in later years when your income is higher anyway.
How the step up SIP calculator works
The calculator runs month by month. Every month the SIP amount is added and the whole balance grows at the monthly rate. At the start of every new year the SIP amount is increased by the step up percentage you choose.
SIP in year k = Starting SIP × (1 + step up %)^(k − 1) Monthly rate i = (1 + yearly return)^(1/12) − 1
- Monthly investment: the amount you start with in year one
- Annual step up: the percentage increase applied at the start of every year
- Expected return rate: yearly return you expect from the fund
- Time period: total years you plan to stay invested
How much should you step up?
- Match the step up to your expected salary growth. A 10% step up is realistic for most salaried people in India.
- If your income is irregular, choose a smaller step up like 5% so the SIP never becomes a burden.
- You can always change the step up later. Fund houses let you modify or cancel the top-up without any charge.
- A fixed-amount step up (for example ₹500 extra every year) is easier to plan if you prefer round numbers.
Frequently asked questions
Is step up SIP better than a normal SIP?
If your income grows every year, yes. A step up SIP lets you invest more as you earn more, so your investment keeps pace with your lifestyle and inflation. The final corpus is usually 30% to 100% higher than a flat SIP over 15 to 20 years.
Can I set up a step up SIP in any mutual fund?
Almost all fund houses and apps such as Groww, Zerodha Coin, Kuvera, Paytm Money and the AMC websites offer a top-up or step up option while starting a SIP. For an existing SIP you may need to cancel and restart it with the top-up option.
What step up percentage should I choose?
A 10% yearly increase is the most common choice because it roughly matches average salary growth. If you are unsure, start with 5% and increase it when you get a raise.
Does the step up happen every month or every year?
In this calculator the increase happens once every 12 months. Some fund houses also allow a half-yearly step up, which would give a slightly higher result.
Is the return from a step up SIP guaranteed?
No. The calculator assumes a steady return rate to give an estimate. Mutual fund returns move with the market and can be higher or lower than the rate you enter.
